Hi Wayne
I'm from King Island, Tasmania, Australia, where my husband and I live and work,(he as a Meat Inspector, and me as a nurse). But of late I've been home very sick with Shingles. Despite the pain, or maybe because of it, God has continued to give me songs to add to a cantata I've been compiling over the past couple of years, and just this morning felt I must put some words down about the Lord's parting gift of the Holy Spirit and Paul's admonition to be 'filled with the Spirit'. It's so very easy to skip over this part if our church doesn't major on it, or only leaves it to a once-yearly Whit-Sunday message.

Anyway on most occasions the Lord also gives me a tune for my words, but because of my tiredness etc I felt He was helping me out today by letting me dig into my 'bank vault' of precious hymns learned from childhood, for a tune to fit the words. As soon as I asked the Lord for such a tune, a number immediately came to mind. Then came "May the Mind of Christ my Saviour" and I felt I'd found the tune I should use, but then had to check to see if it was Public Domain or not.

It was lovely reading your comment on the author and composer and I wondered if you would let me use that as a footnote at the end of my own hymn please? At this stage it is only partly finished, and I may even include one of the verses from the original to tie in with the theme on my heart. If you are interested I can email you the finished words, or more if you'd like that.

By the way my website, is a little part-time business I have along with nursing and song-writing. We Aussies are very blessed with ancient bush-tucker and this is the baseis of Kakadu Juice - a new and highly nutritious, God-given blend of fruits mixed with some other exotics, and at only 30ml (1oz) daily is very easily incorporated into the breakfast routine. Testimonials coming from happy users are beginning to be posted to the webpage, but there are many, many more. Because its still a young company, it's only marketed in Oz and New Zealand so far, but watch out; it won't be too long before it will be on its way to USA!!! (When the time is right).

I can see I'm going to have to visit your page a lot more, since there is so much interesting reading. Must go now though,

Cheers and blessings, Jo

Daddy, every year on the 2nd of June I think "THIS is really Father's Day." I am so thankful for you and the extra twenty years God has blessed me with such a wonderful father. I almost called you yesterday but it is easier to sit here crying than to do it over the phone. :)

We are all thankful the Lord has given you these years. You are a testimony of His wonderful love and mercy. This brings back many memories. First, Hey, I gave you that haircut right there in that hospital bed! Second, that is when you told all the nurses that I was your beautiful sister! You have probably lived to regret that :)
I love you, Wayne. Because you love my sister and the Lord!
Your sister in Christ,
Elizabeth

I note with great interest your podcast of C.S.Lewis wonderful book. A group from our church Prince of Peace recently attended a live presentation and subsequent discussion of the work. At the discussion, I thought it might make a great feature to lead a class in the fall. Can you put me in touch with the people/person who may have led this effort at your church. I would like to know more - as I am not a trained minister and could use all the guidance available. Peace, Mark

I can think of many reasons to support Al Mohler for SBC President and only one reason not to.

The President appoints the nominating committee. It's the only real power the President has. To appoint the people who will select the trustees of the institution you serve (yes, they have to be voted on; but we vote on the people the committee presents) is a conflict of interest. Mohler could recuse himself from any ExCom meeting that deals with issues related to Southern; but he can't recuse himself from appointing the nominating committee.

I suppose the argument is that because Mohler is a good guy (and I believe he is) that the potential for harm is small. I would agree. But the potential exists and that's enough for me to want to avoid any entity leader from serving as President.

I'm grieved over this whole affair. It is part of a long chain of unfortunate actions taken by those within SBC life against the doctrines of grace. I agree with you wholeheartedly about some who are more concerned about the petals of the TULIP than about the cross of Christ, and which grieves me even more.

I admire the approach your pastor has taken and am glad to have him as a friend.

Thanks for sharing this background information, it throws more light on the situation. I think both sides of these issues might be better served to call things what they are. In a lot of ways Arbuckle is showing more integrity that the "Building Bridges" people. Disagreement over theology is not always bad. But it is wrong to pretend like we're talking about the same thing when we both know we're not.

Rod,

Not all individual BCM entities are forbidden from soliciting help beyond the Associational budget. Norman and Stillwater both have freedom to do so.

It would only make sense, given Tulsa's metro culture and our particular funding issues, that the state would give them the freedom to do so here as well. One can only wonder why this has not happened already...

I had to read the screwtape letters for school and your vocabulary really helped me with reading it. I didn't understand alot of words but the defintions you put on helped. I was able to access this from Google, which led me to 3 different websites, you've got quite a trail of blogs!

You made the point so much better (and more humorously) than I could have. Just thinking about the idiocy causes words to spew out of my mouth with more venom than wit. Which is why I don't blog about the SBC. :) It would be a "Top 100 Things that Drive Me Crazy" list and nothing more.

Wow, Wayne! Love it that you are doing this!
For Micah Singleton: Thom is at Christ Our King 503 E Nifong Blvd Ste I PMB 128 Columbia MO 65201 1-573-256-5225 "Coincidentally" ha! just spoke with Frankie Haling this am by phone and she mentioned it. Also for Micah - you grew up with our kids at Tanglewood and thought you might want to check out James' website @ http://www.nonconforums.com/ He is in Orlando, FL and, with friends, has started this website for spiritual discussion/sharing. (I can't believe you guys are both in FL!) Bill (Billy Don) is in Santa Monica and is a CGI artist for Digital Domain. He also contributes to this site. Check out Transformers which is his latest project! The boys would love to hear from you. Rachel is a SBC Pastor's wife in Muskogee, OK. with our 2 grandchildren, Stephen-8th grade and Sarah-5th grade.
Micah, know that Father will make it possible for your relationship with your parents to become even more intimate. He will make it possible for you all to still be close even though you will be separated by even greater miles. What an advantage technology affords you to keep on sharing your lives with each other! I hope they will have the tech tools to do this. SKYPE with webcams are awesome to have real-time audio/video conversations. We have become even closer with the boys because our conversations are precious treasures because of the distance. We find ourselves discussing the really important things and loving each other more intimately. I know Father will give this to you. How difficult distance is, though! Jim and I will be praying for you and especially your little ones that they will know your dear parents through their coming absence. We will also pray for your parent's ministry in such a needy country. Micah - if you would - please send my email address to your parents. We would love to continue praying for them! okieflamingo@hotmail.com I believe that families are Father's joy and He will comfort you in your separation and bless your relationship with Him and them as you have not experienced before. I believe that good things are ahead for you all. Loved by Him assures you of this!
Back to Wayne: We are at FBC in Wagoner. Our hearts still long for SBChurches to return to their beginnings! Hope you and your family are well.

Pregador27,
Thank you for your kindness. I haven't had the time to write further on the convention. I was encouraged on the whole, especially compared with last year, but there is still much that troubles me about SBC "business".

Thanks for dropping by.

Micah,
Good to hear from you. We got a note in the mail just last week from your folks. We heard a few months back that they would be going to Zambia. Exciting stuff, huh? We are praying for them, and looking forward to hearing of God's work in their lives there. I'm glad you found my little project. It is mostly a platform to podcast the messages preached from our church here in Tulsa, but I do from time to time leave my "indigestion" on these pages, as you can tell from this post.

There is a connection here at Trinity with Thom Smith. Here is where he first met Kathy. Her father was pastor here back in the 70's. Our current pastor, Rod Harris, grew up here and was heavily influenced by Thom's father-in-law, Paul Cook. Pastor Rod stays loosely in touch with Thom. Right now I believe he is somewhere in Missouri, and I am sad to say, I believe has become a Presbyterian.

Again, it was good to hear from you. I hope you find this site useful. Download a message and listen to our pastor. He's almost as good as Thom Smith; on a good day, better.

Mr Hatcher,
I happened upon your blog by mistake,(looking for Thom Smith) and had to leave a note saying hi. I am living in St Petersburg, FL with my wife Marie and my three sons, Jude(4), Atticus(3), and Soren(4 weeks). I am a manager with Starbucks and am looking to go to seminary in the next few years. I hope all is well in your neck of the woods...sounds like the SBC is keeping you busy:). My parents are going to Zambia at the end of this year if you hadn't heard. Kind of a difficult thing to come to grips with at this time but am confident that God will provide all our needs including long-distance relationships. Glad to reconnect with you and hope your family is well.

Ben,
Thanks for your comment. I don't know how I missed your comment on this post for so long. Well, yes I do: I have been working on several other projects that have taken a good deal of my time away from this blog. I am not a prolific blogger, but I have been remiss in not keeping up here.

Your quotations are quite interesting. I am not thorough on the Anabaptists, I know. I do realize there was a wide variety of doctrinal positions, in various areas among the Anabaptists. The purpose of the post was to point out Southwestern's fixation on the Anapaptists, and at the same time their apparent aversion to the Magisterial Reformers.

Good work on your part, though. You must be a bit of a follower/scholar of Anabaptist history.

Best regards,
Wayne Hatcher

Did The Anabaptists Immerse?

(The common thought of most Baptist historians today is that the Anabaptists practiced sprinkling or pouring for baptism. While it is admitted that their was a wide variety of beliefs among the Anabaptists and that some of them did practice affusion, a great many of them did practice immersion. Below are a few quotes I think you will find most interesting. – Ben Stratton)

The Swiss Anabaptists

"Wolfgang Ulmann, on the journey to Schaffhausen, met Conrad Grebel who instructed him so highly in the knowledge of Anabaptism that he would not sprinkle out of a dish, but was drawn under and covered over with the waters of the Rhine." Kessler’s History, pg. 266. 1902.

The Germany Anabaptists

"The Anabaptists leaders, Hubmaier, Denck, Hatzer, Hut, likewise appeared in Augsubrg, and gathered a congregation of eleven hundred members. They had a general synod in 1527. They baptized by immersion." Phillip Schaff, History of the Christian Church. VI. 578 (Schaff, one the most respected Protestant historians, readily admits many of the Germany Anabaptists immersed.- Ben)

The Dutch Anabaptists

"The word of the Lord commands us that we, with sincere hearts, desire to die to sin, to bury our sins with Christ, and with him to arise to a new life, even as baptism is portrayed." Menno Simon, Christian Baptism, pg. 17

"In the third place, we are informed by the historians, ancient and modern, also by the decrees, that baptism was changed both as to its mode and time of administering. In the beginning of the holy church, persons were dipped in common water, on their first profession, up their own faith, according to the Scriptures. Menno Simon, Christian Baptism, pg. 16

The Polish Anabaptists

"Baptism is "the immersion in water and the emmersion of a person who believes the Gospel and repents" Racovian Catechism, 1574, LXXI (This catechism describing the beliefs of the Polish Anabaptists was first issued in 1574 - Ben)

The English Anabaptists

"The water of baptism taketh not away our sin for then it were a precious water. . . We be plunged under the water. . . And this we promised to do when we be baptize and we signify even the same, when we be plunged under the water." Sum of Scripture, pg. 4401. (This book was first published in Dutch, but was translated into English in 1529 and was the hand-book for the English Anabpaitsts in the mid 1500’s. - Ben)

Wayne,
Thanks for recommending Driscoll. I have heard various things about him.. but never heard him. So I will give it a listen. I have to agree with one point strongly. Some of the the most rewarding and sweet times with brethren have been smoking a good cigar with plenty of beer or a good cafe liquor. It dose seem to me that such times are too infrequent for men and what use to be called the "city gate" or the "market place" is very much empty of christian influence. Ironically, this condition seems to have come about by a false christain ethic otherwise known as "legalism". Keep writing dear brother. I have not read you in a while but thanks for your perserverance in clear biblical thinking.
We miss your fellowship so much, my soul is warmed by your words and rememberance of time spent together talking about Christ, his mercy to sinners and his worthiness to be gloriously worshiped. Greetings to you all in the forever blessed Name, our Lord Jesus..
           in gospel bonds,
                      Don and Gail

Dear Dr. Yarnell,
Thank you for your comment. I hope we can clear up our misunderstanding. I really would like to know your position. I do appreciate you taking at least part of the blame in my missing the point. I did feel that your comments on The Great Divide were a bit evasive and vague. May I ask, in what sense were you using the word orthodoxy; the broad, general sense; or the more narrow, theological, creedal sense?

I'm not sure what you mean by the recent proposals for "theological triage". There have been many proposals since Dr. Mohler first introduced the phrase last July. If I read you correctly, this is a theological issue that needs to be addressed of the long view. The immediate issue needing attention, however, is over the encroachment upon the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 by the IMB policies on baptism and private prayer language. Isn't a working "triage" in place in the Baptist Faith and Message 2000? Although not clearly differentiated, both primary and secondary doctrines are laid out within its pages, and should serve us in guiding Southern Baptists in faith and practice, including IMB appointment of missionaries. I find it odd that its predecessor served us well for nearly forty years, and yet after less than a decade this current Faith and Message needs augmentation, at least as concerns IMB appointment of missionaries. The only serious proposal that I am aware of by the dissenters is the proposal to let the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 stand alone as a guide for Southern Baptists, and the IMB, or if it is found lacking, have it amended at the next convention to better reflect the beliefs of all Southern Baptists.

I look forward to your further comments on this issue, as I feel you have much to contribute. You don't seem to be an unreasonable man, just a bit hard to tie down.

In Christ,
Wayne Hatcher

Dear Wayne,

Thank you for this thoughtful post. Honestly, you apparently missed the point I made about theological discrimination, which forms the basis of your critique. This is probably my fault, as I did not want to make a big deal about it. However, this is a theological issue that needs clarification.

So let me blunt. The proposals recently put forward for "theological triage" lack coherency and applicability. The idea is fine in principle, but nobody has yet to offer any system worthy of agreement by all Southern Baptists.

In Christ,
Malcolm

Art,
Thanks. That was the only shot I took. I got Bowden at his best on the first try. I was thinking later that night, how stupid for us to run out after the meeting without speaking to you a bit more, and I also failed to introduce my wife Suzan to you. I hope to run into you again soon. Pastor Rod is the one you need to get to know, though. He's one of those faithful soldiers in the trenches who never blows his own horn. When he preaches he doesn't roam the platform and wave around, like Stetzer, but he is every bit as dynamic and articulate. And besides all that, he preaches Christ and Him crucified.

In Him,
Wayne

I'll let you know when I figure it out. ;) What I am seeing is the consumer mentality coupled with an understanding of salvation as merely fire insurance. Discussing how many in our churches participate in Halloween, my sister said "They want all that the church offers [fire insurance? church programs? babysitting? entertainment?] AND the world!" For the record, I am speaking of the celebration of Halloween more as a symptom of the problem than THE problem itself. A couple of recent conversations had me raving "PAGANS!" on the way home. I do not understand or like what I have seen of the SBC culture. Thank you and Mrs. Plowman for giving us something better.

I do not understand or like what I have seen of the SBC culture. Thank you and Mrs. Plowman for giving us something better.

Dear Wayne,

My own abstinence statement is virtually identical to Brother Rod's.

Thanks for you and Mrs. Wayne's teamwork in slugging it out over at SBTC blog. It was nice of Dr. R to let me get in the last word.

Thank you very much for the flower bulbs. That was a very kind gesture, and I appreciate it. To be honest, when I saw the box was from you, I just knew it was going to be a bottle of wine of some sort, and I was wondering what in the world I would do with it. Imagine my relief when I opened it!

Adjusting for the fact that I am 250 miles south of you, and that it is about 5-7 degrees warmer here (107 here today, instead of just 100 there), when should I plant them?

Love in Christ,

Jeff

Characteristics of someone with the gift of prophecy:

A strong need to express himself verbally.
A strong ability to discern the character and motives of other people.
Wholehearted involvement in whatever he is doing.
Very open to correction.
Extremely loyal.
Willingness to suffer for what is right.
Persuasive in defining truth.
II. Misunderstandings about someone with the gift of prophecy:

His sense of right and wrong is often judged as intolerant.
His strong desire to proclaim truth is often interpreted as disinterest in listening to other people.
Frankness is viewed as harshness or impatience.
Interest in groups may be misinterpreted as a disinterest in individuals.
II.
Wayne,

YOU ARE SO RIGTH ON!!! In my humble opinion.

My Brothers and Sisters over the years have told me that I have the Gift of Prophecy. I never paid that much attention to that except, that what I have thought or said, always came TRUE. When Dr. Charles Stanley (Past President SBC) Preached a series on the (Ministering Through Spiritual Gifts), We recorded the Series. When viewing, Dr. Stanley Preached on the Gift of Prophecy, my wife and Family said, thats you (Right On). In Touch had a test that one could take, so I took the Test and it said I (by100 Percent) had the Gift of Prophecy. We purchased the CD series for Our Home Bible Studies and it is a Great Tool.

That Said: I got involved in Blogging because of hearing about something happening within the IMB of the SBC. My family and I have been involved in the Missions Field for many years, and I know the LOVE that one has, who is in or about Missions, for the LOST. When I looked at all the Bloggers I saw Many Hearts and some without Hearts.(GOD KNOWS). If one was to follow my comments or posting, one would see my opinion, I have never (even though I try) been a perfect CHRISTIAN. I read and comprehend, when reading articles and seeing Pictures of the authors I draw opinions. Thus this is why I say YOU ARE SO RIGTH ON!!! In my humble opinion.

A Brother in CHRIST
